Compost improves overall soil condition by enhancing both physical and chemical properties of the soil that are important for plant growth. Spreading compost one half inch deep on a lawn and watering it in during the spring and fall of the year will lessen weeds, troublesome insects and diseases, and also cuts irrigation needs. Also applying compost to sunken areas in a lawn can help achieve levelness.
